Van Dee`s Ice Cream Shoppe in Johnston

Not sure if Van Dees is under new management or has new owners, but things aren't as good as the last few years. Our fave has always been the Super Fudge Brownie Sunday. The cup size is the same, instead of a nice size brownie you get 3 little bite size pieces and a little fudge, no whip cream and no cherry either. May have to check out any other Mom& Pop shops....

What a great little local ice cream stand! Traditional soft serve, huge selection of treats. What better way to treat yourself on a warm, sunny afternoon!

The ice cream here is delicious!!! Lots of different concoctions to try!! My only complaint is nobody is overly friendly here. They all seem annoyed or rushed even though each time I've been, 4 times now, it hasn't been that busy. They aren't rude, just not very friendly. It wont stop me from going back as the ocean cream is extremely good. I have not tried any of the food items but I hear they are good.

The malt I had was nice and thick as I had requested, but very light on the flavoring. Just barely could taste butterscotch flavor. Prefer hard pack icecream to soft serve but was not given that option. Only 2 girls appeared to be working on a Sunday night and there were a lot of people in line so it was about 30 minutes to get icecream. Too long! to wait for a mediocre malt.

Van Dee's Ice Cream is nutz! Wonderful ice cream and good areas to socialize.

I enjoy taking my nephew there and he enjoys their ice cream. I can say I love their ice cream so worth it.

Good place to get some soft serve. Just be careful if they make their blitz for you that they don't put a hole in the bottom of the cup. Had some foam from the cup in my ice cream when that happened.

I lived in the area for years. I remember going there and they have good ice cream. I went there when I was little. My friends went there all of the time. I have Recently moved away. I miss going there. I have been gone from Johnston for many years.

This is the best softserve ice cream place in Des Moines! Although there is usually a long line, it is well worth the wait! Their blitzes are the perfect consistency; I recommend the brownie blitz.

Service was good. Did not relize it was cash or check only so had to go to an ATM so that was a bit disappointing but did not affect the quality of the visit. Everything was good but the cone was a bit stale which is why I gave 4 stars.

Classic summer ice cream shop. Menu is more like a Dairy Queen than a Baskin Robbins. I like the vanilla here better than most places around town. You'll find a nice gazebo out back, and a bike trail stops right behind it. Bring cash, they don't take cards.

In the search for the best blizzard, snowstorm, blitz, twirl, etc., I tried Van Dee's on a Monday night. No drive-thru but the carryout line was not too long and my order was made quickly. You order at their outside window. They only take cash which I was prepared but credit card is much more convenient. I ordered a small chocolate blitz with peanut butter cups. The chocolate ice cream was good and I definitely can taste the peanut butter. I wished there were more chunks or at least larger chunks of the peanut butter cups. Maybe adding chocolate chips could improve it? Overall, a good experience.

Incredible selection. Plenty of outside tables and benches.

I think the treats are good quality, but be prepared to wait. Service is always slow here.
